Artist Biography
Born in Missouri in 1892, Addison Johnson studied at the Art Students League of New York from 1917-1918. In 1922, he exhibited at the Minneapolis Institute of Art before moving to Santa Monica, California. There, he continued his studies at the Otis Art Institute while working as an illustrator and commercial artist.
Johnson was an active member of the Santa Monica Art Association, serving as vice president and treasurer. There he met fellow artist Iris Richards, whom he married in 1930. During World War II, he drew political cartoons for The Honolulu Advertiser.
After completing a mural for the Santa Monica Medical Center in 1950, Johnson moved with his family to Riverside. He taught at the Riverside Art Center alongside Milford Zornes and also instructed students at March Air Force Base and the Moreno Valley Art Association. Johnson regularly exhibited throughout Riverside County.
An accomplished musician as well as a painter, Johnson performed with a string quartet and Hawaiian band. His paintings remain a lasting tribute to the peaceful landscapes and rural character of Southern California.
