Learn the basics of throwing clay on a potter’s wheel in this four-part course for all skill levels! Join teaching artist Tara Weber inside SPAM’s Cole Creativity Center to learn how to center clay, pull cylinders, trim, and glaze. Each week’s class will focus on a new step of the process, including throwing, trimming, and glazing. Students will finish the course with an understanding of all the steps required to create a fully functional ceramic piece.
This is a four-part course that will be taught on four consecutive Saturdays: October 11, October 18, October 25 and November 1, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
This class is for ages 16 and over. The cost of the four-part course is $230 per person. All skill levels are welcome and all materials are provided. Preregistration is required and space is limited. The course will be held inside SPAM’s Cole Creativity Center located at 123 N 10th Stree, Santa Paula, CA. Free parking is available directly behind the building and students may enter through the front or back door.
All 4-week courses include FREE Open Studio hours on Thursdays from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. A complimentary 5 pounds of clay will be provided per week to current students. This resource is available to current students only and open studio space is granted on a first come, first serve basis. Our Kiln Technician is onsite to answer any questions during Open Studio hours.

*Please note: Long nails can make working with clay frustrating. We recommend trimming your nails down before attending class. Clay is also very messy, so please dress in clothing you don’t mind getting stained and covered in clay. You are welcome to bring an apron and towel/rag for wiping your hands throughout the process. Long hair must be pulled back as a safety precaution.
About Our Teaching Artist:
Tara Weber is a local ceramic artist who focuses on wheel thrown pottery. She started her discovery of clay at Ventura College where she completed her Associates of Art degree. She spent two years studying at SFSU. While there, she worked on campus teaching young children at the onsite preschool. During her years of study, she worked for a local pottery production company known as Heath Ceramics. Inspired by the pottery production she returned back to Ventura, CA. Living here she was able to open her own business selling hand made art and teaching private lessons. She continued her education taking courses in business and ceramics at CSUCI. Her experiences allowed her to then teach classes at local art centers. Nowadays, she continues to create functional wheel thrown work perfect for everyday use and she enjoys being inspired by a diverse group of artists that allow her to continue learning and growing.
