Oil Painting Workshop: Live Portraits

Explore portrait painting from a live model with teaching artist Paulo Ruvalcaba! Students will learn how to simplify facial features into shapes and values to create a likeness of the model on a 12” x 16” canvas panel. Paulo will demonstrate the painting process form beginning to end and assist individually throughout the workshop. Students will be able to choose their color palette from monochrome in Burnt Sienna, two-tone with white and black or Limited (Zorn) Palette in Titanium White, Ivory Black, Cadmium Red Light and Yellow Ochre.
This one-day workshop will be taught on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.
This class is for ages 16 and over. The cost of the one-day workshop is $60 per person. All skill levels are welcome and all materials are provided. Preregistration is required and space is limited. The course will be held inside SPAM’s Cole Creativity Center located at 123 N 10th St., Santa Paula, CA. Free parking is available directly behind the building and students may enter through the front or back door.

About Our Teaching Artist:
Paulo Ruvalcaba is an Illustrator and Concept Designer for the Film, Video Game and Toy industries. He has taught Figure Drawing and Painting at the School of Light and Color in Fair Oaks, CA and weekend plein-air excursions on location.
As an instructor, he guides his students to identify and simplify the Four Fundamentals of painting in order to interpret and express their subject in a direct manner.
A native of Southern California, Paulo traveled to Italy to study oil painting at the Florence Academy of Art summer program. On returning to California, he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia. As a working professional in the entertainment industry, he continued his study of oil painting at the Los Angeles Academy of Figurative Art and furthers his development through study at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, The Animation Guild and the exceptional Brainstorm School in Burbank. Paulo is currently a Senior Designer at Jakks Pacific , Inc. in Santa Monica and displays his fine art throughout Los Angeles and Ventura Counties.
