Artist Biography

Dorothy Sklar was an American painter known for her work in watercolor and oil, exploring styles ranging from impressionism and realism to abstraction.

Born in New York City in 1906, Sklar moved with her family to Southern California at around age four. She grew up in the Los Angeles area and initially pursued a degree in education at the University of Southern California. In the 1930s, she attended UCLA, and later studied at the Chouinard Art Institute under Millard Sheets and Stanton MacDonald-Wright. She also received instruction from Dong Kingman.

Sklar began her career as an art teacher in the Santa Monica public schools in the early 1940s. While teaching, she developed her watercolor technique and eventually transitioned to painting full-time. She often painted en plein air from inside her parked car, capturing street scenes and old houses, particularly in East Los Angeles.

During her career, Sklar was active in numerous arts organizations, including the California Water Color Society, Laguna Beach Art Association, Women Painters of the West, and Westwood Art Association.
