Artist Biography
Jean Mannheim was born in Germany in 1863. After being drafted into the German army, he deserted and fled to France, where he studied at the École Delécluse, the Académie Colarossi, and with painter William-Adolphe Bouguereau.
After immigrating to Illinois in the 1880s, Mannheim worked as a portrait painter and art instructor before teaching for two years at Frank Brangwyn's school in London. Following his return to the United States, he taught at the Denver Art School and, in 1908, settled permanently in Pasadena. He maintained a studio in Los Angeles' Blanchard Building and, in 1913, founded the Stickney Memorial School of Fine Arts in Pasadena.
While his early work in Paris focused primarily on figure painting, Mannheim became best known for the vibrant California landscapes he created after settling in the American West. A respected teacher as well as an accomplished painter, he exhibited widely throughout the United States and earned awards at the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition (1909) and the Panama-California Exposition (1915).
Today, Mannheim's work is held in the collections of the Denver Art Museum, the Irvine Museum, the Laguna Art Museum, the Long Beach Museum of Art, the Orange County Museum of Art, and the Springville Museum of Art. He died in Pasadena in 1945.
