Artist Biography
Angel Espoy was a Spanish-American painter known for his vivid seascapes, maritime scenes, and California landscapes.
Born on October 2, 1879, in Villa Nueva, Spain, Espoy joined the Spanish merchant marines at the age of eighteen, eventually serving as first mate. His years at sea sparked a deep love for the ocean and sailing ships, which would later become central themes in his artwork.
Driven by a desire to capture his experiences, he studied painting in Barcelona with renowned artist Joaquín Sorolla (1863–1923). Espoy then spent two years in Havana, Cuba, where he began earning a living by painting decorative designs on furniture. In 1904, struggling financially, he immigrated to New York City in search of new opportunities.
After a brief return to Spain, Espoy relocated to San Francisco in 1914. There, he worked for several years creating cartoons for silent films while continuing to paint on weekends alongside artists such as Manuel Valencia, Carl Jonnevold, and John Califano.
In 1922, Espoy moved to Southern California, where he was finally able to support himself solely through the sale of his paintings. His work often reflected his deep affection for the sea, with detailed depictions of clipper ships and coastal scenes. He also painted the rolling hills of California, especially fields of poppies and lupines, with equal skill and sensitivity.
Angel Espoy passed away in Seal Beach, California, on January 31, 1963.
