Artist Biography
Walter Barron Currier was born in Springville, Massachusetts, in 1879. Showing an early interest in art, he attended Brown and Cornell Universities, where he studied with Arthur Wesley Dow, Eben Comins, and Kenyon Cox.
In 1913, Currier moved to Los Angeles, where he became known for his California landscapes and waterscapes. He also worked in etching, printmaking, and illustration, developing a passion for teaching alongside his artistic practice. He became head of the art department at Lincoln High School and played an important role in Southern California's growing art community.
In 1926, Currier began teaching summer sessions at the University of California, Berkeley, and opened the Currier Creative Art School in Santa Monica. He passed away in Santa Monica in 1934.
