Explore the beautiful art of Nerikomi, a traditional Japanese ceramic technique that creates intricate patterns by layering and combining different colored clay bodies. Using stacked layers of colored clay, you'll learn how to press, inlay, shape, and assemble slabs and coils to reveal striking marbled and geometric designs that run throughout each piece.

In this hands-on workshop, you'll be guided through the fundamentals of Nerikomi, and finish off by using your designs to make slab-built bowls. All materials and tools are provided. This class is great for beginners and anyone interested in leveling up their hand building practice by exploring surface design through clay.

If you have any additional questions about the course you can email the instructor at ceramics@santapaulaartmuseum.org

Please allow 4–5 weeks for your work to be completed. Our Kiln Tech, Jynell Dimalanta, will reach out via email to schedule your pickup.

This workshop is for ages 16 and over. The cost of workshop is $110 per person. All materials are provided. Preregistration is required and space is limited. The course will be held inside the Cole Creativity Center located at 123 N 10th St, Santa Paula, CA. Free parking is available directly behind the building and students may enter through the front or back door.

Questions? Please call the Museum at (805) 525-5554 ext. 104 or email creativity@santapaulaartmuseum.org.

*Please note: Long nails can make working with clay frustrating. We recommend trimming your nails down before attending class. Clay is also very messy, so please dress in clothing you don’t mind getting stained and covered in clay. You are welcome to bring an apron and towel/rag for wiping your hands throughout the process. Long hair must be pulled back as a safety precaution.
