Explore impressionist techniques to paint dramatic landscapes! Artist Gabriel Islas will teach students how atmosphere can dramatize distance and color to create captivating views of the Inyo Mountains. This course covers the foundations of oil painting, including color theory, paint mixing, and application. Gabriel will provide instruction and demonstration throughout the entire process as you create your own vibrant 18”x 24” oil painting.

This course will meet on six consecutive Saturdays: June 20, June 27, July 11, July 18, July 25, and August 1, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Please note this class will not meet on July 4, 2026.

This class is appropriate for everyone ages 16 and over. The cost of the six-part workshop is $280.00 per person. All skill levels are welcome and all materials are provided. Preregistration is required and space is limited.

The course will be held inside the Cole Creativity Center located at 123 N 10th St, Santa Paula, CA. Free parking is available directly behind the building and students may enter through the front or back door.

About Our Teaching Artist:

Gabriel Islas is a painter and art educator based in Southern California. Gabriel obtained his BFA with an emphasis in painting from Academy of Art University, San Francisco.

Gabriel exhibits atmospheric landscapes in oil painting and has painted at some of America's most dramatic vistas, such as the Eastern Sierras, Grand Tetons and Denali in Alaska. In 2025, He was awarded the Gold Medal at the California Art Club's 114th Gold Medal Exhibition and painted his largest painting to date, at 2.5 feet by 10 feet long. Gabriel teaches oil painting at the Santa Paula Art Museum and his art studio at Pacific & Main Creative Workspace in Ventura, CA.
