Paint skulls and marigolds on oval canvas panels this spooky season alongside teaching artist Gabriel Islas! Gabriel will provide demonstrations, step-by-step instruction, and individualized feedback while introducing techniques for working with transparent pigments, building form, and illuminating a subject with two light sources. Using original reference photos from a professional photo shoot featuring an anatomically correct skull, students will create their own striking seasonal paintings while learning the basics of color mixing.
This workshop is scheduled for Sunday, October 25, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., and is appropriate for everyone ages 16 and over. The cost of the workshop is $60 per person. All skill levels are welcome and all materials are provided. Preregistration is required and space is limited.
The course will be held inside the Cole Creativity Center located at 123 N 10th St, Santa Paula, CA. Free parking is available directly behind the building and students may enter through the front or back door.

About Our Teaching Artist:
Gabriel Islas is a painter and art educator based in Southern California. Gabriel obtained his BFA with an emphasis in painting from Academy of Art University, San Francisco.
Gabriel exhibits atmospheric landscapes in oil painting and has painted at some of America's most dramatic vistas, such as the Eastern Sierras, Grand Tetons, and Denali in Alaska. In 2025, he was awarded the Gold Medal at the California Art Club's 114th Gold Medal Exhibition and painted his largest painting to date, at 2.5 feet by 10 feet long. Gabriel teaches oil painting at the Santa Paula Art Museum and his art studio at Pacific & Main Creative Workspace in Ventura, CA.
