Explore the art of travel sketching with pen and watercolor, using beautiful Santa Paula as your inspiration! Students will begin at the Cole Creativity Center with a brief lesson and instruction from teaching artist Andres Salazar. From there, the class will head outdoors to discover unique compositions around Santa Paula and learn the steps for creating quick, expressive sketches on location. Students are welcome to bring their own sketchbook or use one of the provided 5” x 7” sketchbooks.

Students are encouraged to wear hats, apply sunscreen, and bring a water bottle.

This beginner-friendly single-day workshop will be taught on Saturday, September 5, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

This class is for ages 16 and over. The cost of this workshop is $45 per person. All skill levels are welcome and all materials are provided. Preregistration is required and space is limited. The course will be begin inside the Cole Creativity Center located at 123 N 10th St, Santa Paula, CA. Free parking is available directly behind the building and students may enter through the front or back door.

About Our Teaching Artist:

Andres Salazar is a lifelong traveler and artist, always searching for stories and adventures to capture through visual art. A longtime painter, he currently lives and works at the WAV (Working Artists Ventura) artist studio lofts in Ventura, California.

After receiving formal art training in Fresno and Santa Barbara, Andres began his career in the graphic novel industry as an artist assistant to Howard Chaykin. He went on to publish several graphic novels and children’s books, developing skills in draftsmanship and illustration that continue to influence his fine art practice.

Andres is also a filmmaker and educator. He has written and directed short films as well as the feature documentary Small Town Quirky. He has presented on art at conferences, hosts the YouTube channel The Art of Comics, and teaches art and visual language through arts organizations and school districts throughout Ventura County.
